Summary, etc. När Gabriella Blythes nittiotvååriga farmor Jaunty drabbas av sjukdom och blir för klen för att leva ensam flyttar Gabriella in hos henne. Jaunty vägrar att lämna den avlägset belägna stugan vid havsviken Frenchman’s Creek i Cornwall där hon bott i decennier. Gabriellas och Jauntys stillsamma liv vid havet får ett avbrott när en främling dyker upp under en storm ute på havet. Finn, som främlingen heter, har sökt sig till Frenchman's Creek eftersom han ärvt en vackert målad akvarell med motiv av en ensligt belägen stuga och målningen har något med hans egen familj att göra. När Finn försöker undersöka historien bakom målningen uppdagas en märklig familjehemlighet om ett långtgående svek.
