Summary, etc. "Det är så mycket jag inte vet om min mamma." Kaj Schuelers mor talade nästan aldrig om sin uppväxt, och när hon dog påbörjade han en upptäcktsresa in i hennes förflutna. Ruth Herz föddes av judiska föräldrar i tyska Bingen och kom till Sverige i januari 1939, en månad före sin 16-årsdag. Tillsammans med en grupp andra judiska ungdomar grundade hon en kibbutz på Hälsinggården i Dalarna. Kvar i Tyskland fanns hennes föräldrar, vars tillvaro blev alltmer kringskuren på grund av förföljelse och förtryck. Samtidigt som Ruth levde i en judisk gemenskap med drömmar om att utvandra till Palestina, Hemlandet, blev hennes föräldrars liv allt svårare, till den dag då de deporterades från sitt hem. Spåren efter dem slutar i polska Piaski. Troligen dödades de på plats eller i något av nazisternas närliggande läger. Ruth återförenades aldrig med sina föräldrar, och den familjehistoria som den unge Kaj skulle ha velat lyssna till ekade av tystnad. Kaj Schueler skriver personligt och drabbande om en familj som slets itu.
